Choral, Theatrical & Speech Arts

PERFORMANCES

Performing is an important facet of the Kingsway Children’s Choir experience, providing opportunities to share musical success and build confidence. Performances include recitals, festivals and community outreach performances. Choristers are expected to attend all performances as each singer plays a valuable role in the choir. Highlights of the 2017/18 concert season: Scarlett Heights Retirement Residence, Village of Humber Heights, Humbervale Place, KCM’s Orchestra and Choir Concert and Children’s Music Festival.

PLACEMENT AND/OR AUDITIONS

Placement auditions for both choirs will be held on June 6, September 5 & 12 and/or by appointment during the summer and in the fall. Choristers may join mid-season, space permitting. Contact the KCM office for placement audition information and to schedule an audition time.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR & DRUM ENSEMBLE
WED 6:30-8:00

A unique choral experience focusing on the complete human ‘instrument’, body and voice, this ensemble is for children (ages 7 & up) who enjoy singing and moving. Rehearsals begin with a 30-minute drum circle where choristers play African djembes, focusing on listening and responding – an adventure in self-expression and team-building. The Children’s Choir learns unison and two-part repertoire with attention on proper technique, diction and natural expression. Creative movement, solfege and basic theory are incorporated to build broader musical knowledge. Repertoire includes folk, classical and popular music as choristers explore songs and rhythms from around the world.

CHAMBER SINGERS
WED 7:00-8:30

The Chamber Singers is for more seasoned, experienced singers and this ensemble provides an excellent opportunity for students studying voice privately to experience the power of singing in a social setting. Both choirs join forces from 7:00-8:00 pm and chamber singers mentor newer singers and serve as section leaders. The Chamber Singers rehearse on their own from 8:00-8:30 pm learning challenging two and three-part repertoire while exploring a variety of languages and styles from traditional and classical to contemporary. Chamber Singers are welcome to participate in the drum circle from 6:30-7:00 pm.

Effective communication is a lifelong skill that is empowering! Through the study of Speech Arts, build the skills to present yourself and your ideas – to move, to influence and to persuade. For students who need a boost in confidence, and for those who already have some presentation experience.

LEVEL 1: GR. 1-3

LEVEL 2: GR. 4-6

LEVEL 3: GR. 7-8

INSTRUCTOR: JULIA PAL

Through public speaking, storytelling techniques and improvisation, students learn to sequence and summarize facts and thoughts in their own words, without the use of a script. They explore ways to use their voices effectively and improve their diction, articulation and delivery. Participants also develop strategies to read aloud and communicate written text and published works with more meaning and expression.

In this group setting, students benefit from presenting their work to one another, as well as becoming observant and attentive audience members. Age appropriate topics and texts will be provided in collaboration with ideas and interests generated by the students.

Each session culminates in a finale recital or open class.
